“Man cannot live by bread alone; he must have peanut butter.” ~James A. Garfield
President Garfield was at least half right. Man—or woman—cannot live by bread alone; she must have bacon and a burger. But peanut butter with that bacon burger?
Before last Friday, my answer would have been no. After last Friday, I’d say I’m open to eating it again.
San Antonio Burger Week
So, why did I try a burger with peanut butter on it? Well, it was only $5 and it seemed like a great way to kick off the inaugural San Antonio Burger Week.
Burger Week? Yep!
According to the official website at https://satxburgerweek.com Burger Week should “draw hardcore burger fanatics and people that can appreciate a good hearty meal.” Sounds good to me!
(I mean, come on. I did just recently go on a little quest called Decemburger… https://eldaeats.com/decemburger/)
But as usual, I digress.
Regardless of how many burgers I’ve eaten in the last three months or so, burgers are always a good idea. The way I see it, Burger Week is a great way for foodies in a city that loves its food to come together, give business to great local burger joints and also support a great cause, as proceeds from burger sales benefit The San Antonio Food Bank https://safoodbank.org. It’s a food win-win!
The Peanut Butter Burger
First, I have never even been much of a peanut butter fan. I was that kid that would always choose a baloney and cheese sandwich over a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It’s just never been my thing.
Second, I do not like to mix my sweet foods with my savory foods. I never have gone for that sort of thing, so the thought of peanut butter on a burger wasn’t high on my list of things I wanted to try. I doubt it ever would have made any list at all if not for Southtown 101 Bar & Grill, and the server Amanda, who convinced me to try it.
Not Your Average Bad Commercial
If you’re around my age, I’m sure you remember those old Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup commercials. Some silly guy walking down the street, not paying attention, eating a chocolate bar, bumps into some silly girl walking down the same street, toward the guy, not paying attention, eating a jar of peanut butter, and boom! They discover true love or something like that.
While I wouldn’t say I discovered true love, I did discover that I do need to continue to get out of my food comfort zone. Giving new foods and new food combinations a chance can be a good thing. Not only for my taste buds, but for my sense of living a well-rounded life.
I have always wanted to live my life with a sense of adventure and since food is a big part of why I enjoy this one and only life, it should be something that continues to lead me toward more new adventures.
And The Survey Says…
So was this an adventure worth taking? Yes!
Amanda was right, the burger doesn’t taste as you’d expect. Somehow, the peanut butter really works with the very soft (and oh, so good) buttery bun, and the crisp and salty pieces of bacon. The texture differences between the bun, the burger (which was very, very good, by the way), the bacon and the peanut butter worked perfectly. Any other kind of bacon, like normal slices of bacon, may not have worked. And if the peanut butter wouldn’t have been warm, it probably wouldn’t have worked either. Southtown 101 knows what they’re doing. It was actually really good. I happily ate the entire burger.
If you would have told me that morning that I was going to eat a burger with peanut butter on it, I would not have believed it. I probably would have even denied it, and with a lot of attitude, too!
Which goes to show that sometimes it’s good not to listen to our attitude and to listen to Amanda, and just try the burger. You may then surprise yourself when you write a blog post telling people that the best thing you ate last week was a Peanut Butter Burger.
Stay tuned for more of my experiences during San Antonio Burger Week. Until then, happy eating. I hope you find an adventure or two out there.

Also, regarding those old Reese’s commercials. Who walks around eating a jar of peanut butter? I don’t know why, but I’ve always wondered about that…
