Losing Liberty

“…when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad…”

~From My Favorite Things

She was my biggest fan whenever I tried out a new recipe.

Best Dog to Ever Dog

We lost our Liberty girl last week.

Boy, that sentence was hard to type, especially through tears. She had to undergo emergency surgery on Tuesday morning that was scheduled the night before and she didn’t make it. While we’re so sad that she’s gone, we’re oh, so happy and grateful that she lived.

Many of you have loved Liberty too and so I’ll share a handful of probably the thousand or so photos I have of her. It also makes me feel better to see her pretty, happy, perfect face. She was our beautiful girl for almost 11 years. One of the best dogs to ever dog. We fell in love with her on July 4, 2010, when she became ours. And that love only grew more and more each day she was part of our family.

She loved the beach.
Her first snow in Ruidoso.

Adventure Dog

She was our adventure girl, our best girl, our lazy-when-we-needed-her-to-be girl but ready-to-go-when-we-wanted-her-to-go girl—she was the definition of unconditional love and support, she was super fun and super protective, always ready to squeak a toy or enjoy a treat. She loved just being with us whether at home or on the road. She loved a road trip! She loved the water, the sun and the snow. Really, she just about loved everyone and everything—except for brooms, trash bags and the UPS man…oh, and a few seemingly creepy people I’m pretty sure must have been serial killers. She was the best. She was beautiful. She was our baby girl.

She was always up for a road trip.
In Montana, with her sister.
She was a true foodie in her own right.
My beautiful girl at Lake Michigan.

My Best Girl

Among the many, many things I loved doing with Liberty was listening to John Coltrane. It has been said that our favorite song of his is his rendition of My Favorite Things. I always told her I’d play it for her at the end of her life, when she was living out her bucket list in her final days. In reality, she lived out her bucket list every day in what were her best days, living and loving every minute of her Martinez-Fithian life.

And while she did get a few of her favorite things in before she left us (a Whataburger feast for what we feared could be her last meal, and sleeping in the bed with us last night…just in case), she’s left me with many of what will be my favorite memories. My heart is so broken right now but I wouldn’t have wanted to know life without her. She is one of the true loves of my life.

She will always be my best girl. XO

And so “…when I’m feeling sad I simply remember my favorite thingsAnd then I don’t feel so bad…”

She will always be my best girl.

The longest and strongest loves + obsessions of my life have always been reading, writing, eating and traveling—and the adventures both big and small that have involved any or all of these. Whether by myself, with those I love most, or the new friends made along the way, my goal is to taste all the world has to offer. One adventure at a time.
