Taking care of people at The Barn Door…

“Having been in the restaurant business, our job in the restaurant business is to be responsible for our customers’ happiness. It’s the nature of the hospitality business. You need to take care of people.”        ~Andrew Zimmern

I agree with Andrew Zimmern, and I think he could have been talking about The Barn Door in San Antonio.

The Barn Door. Taking care of people. People like me, and people like Kim on her 70th birthday.

My goodness, how had I never been to The Barn Door before last week?! What a great San Antonio place! I loved it! The experience may have been just a little bit better than the food (for the price) but the food was really good. I had the lady’s filet mignon which was cooked perfectly and quite good.

They also make their own rolls, their own jelly, and they make all the salad dressings. I tried a little bit of everything to take it all in.

Of course, I also tried four different pies for my #winloseorpie (see my separate blog post about my quest for the best pie in San Antonio. Thank you!)

Our waiter Rudy was really great! I loved the rapport, not only with Rudy but with other members of the staff too. We were there mainly for pie, so we were able to talk to someone about the pies and how Victor (the man who makes the pies) learned how to make the pies from a lady who started there in 1953 and baked them for 30 years before handing off the title of baker to Victor. I just love that!

The pecan, lemon meringue, apple and cherry pies we tried. Yum, yum, yum and yum!

I loved this extra-lemony lemon meringue pie.

So while this wasn’t the cheapest thing I ate last week, let’s just say that sometimes (more than sometimes, really) we’re worth a nice meal that costs more than your average supper. Plus, the quality of the food is good and I did get a lot of food for the money.

What did I love about my meal, or the experience rather, at The Barn Door so much to have awarded it the title of best thing I ate last week? Everything! I loved Rudy, all of the history, all of the historical newspaper clippings, San Antonio nostalgia and military patches and those other things hanging on the walls (and everywhere else inside), and I loved the friendliness of every employee we saw. I also love that if you call and tell them it’s your birthday, they’ll wish you a happy birthday on the sign that’s on their roof. You can bet I’ll be back there to celebrate my birthday one of these years! I hope Victor is still there baking pies.

I was fork-ready for what ended up being the best eating experience last week. I can’t wait to go back!

The longest and strongest loves + obsessions of my life have always been reading, writing, eating and traveling—and the adventures both big and small that have involved any or all of these. Whether by myself, with those I love most, or the new friends made along the way, my goal is to taste all the world has to offer. One adventure at a time.
