“The smell of warming cheese and wine, mellowed with the heat, rose languorously toward their faces, and they all found themselves leaning forward, hypnotized by the smell and the soft bubbling below them.” ~Erica Bauermeister, The School of Essential Ingredients “That’s too much food.” ~our server at Swiss Chuchi in Zurich “Extra cheese, please.” ~usually, my request for almost anything with cheese Wow, Erica Bauermeister’s description of fondue is quite beautiful, romantic even. I don’t disagree with her. I didn’t really disagree with our server on Saturday night either. But that didn’t stop us. After all, I’m usually always about the extra cheese. Fondue. Truth be told I’ve had it twice…

Eating Atlanta
“What’ll ya’ have?!” ~my new favorite folks at The Varsity What a great weekend I had in Atlanta! Not only because the food was great, a few bucket list items were ticked off, but also because, after this being my second visit, I find Atlanta to be one of the friendliest and prettiest big cities I’ve visited. I love Atlanta! It was always going to be a quick visit: leave Friday after work for a nice direct flight from SAT to ATL, and head back the same way on Monday morning. What would we do in between those flights to and fro? The small plan was to have some good…

Traveling. Because adventures are forever.
Travel…as far as you can, as long as you can, as much as you can. I posted most of this a few years ago, after I had been home a little over a week after a trip to London, Paris and Amsterdam and I was already ready for my next adventure. I was likely already planning the next one (which happened to be a Christmas road trip to see Mount Rushmore and then to cozy up in a cabin in West Yellowstone in Montana). I’ve always loved traveling; I’ve always loved maps and globes and compasses; Christopher has always been my patron saint; I’ve always had that thing called wanderlust.…

Make Memories. Have Adventures.
From Ulysses by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’ We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. I think this is true. Make memories, have adventures. And as Tennyson wrote, always want to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Not to yield—no matter our age—so that we’re certain to have way too many wonderful and joyful things to even begin to choose from as we…

Is a Food Picture Worth a Thousand Memories?
“The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.” I am not sure who said this, or even who may have said it first, but I’ve seen the quote all over social media through the years. I’ve even posted it elsewhere, because well, it’s true. At least in my family, it’s always been true. Indeed, some of my best memories were made gathered around a table. Which got me thinking about all those great meals of my life where a photo was never taken… (yes, showing my age!) I think of all the great holidays at my grandmother’s house, the ordinary lunches where my mom would make grilled cheese…
