When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Kolaches

“You better Czech yourself before you wreck yourself.” ~me It doesn’t take long for me to repeat myself. You may remember a few months ago—if you’ve been reading my blog posts so far—when I summarized an earlier quest held last year to find the best kolaches in Texas. I drove around many backroads and highways and interstates, I ate a lot of kolaches, and well, I was reminded of how beautiful my home state is in the spring. Much like last week, I didn’t need the reminder, but still there it was.  Texas Independence Day A somewhat new tradition for Peter and me (Liberty has also been involved and as…

Hey, You Got Peanut Butter in My Burger!

“Man cannot live by bread alone; he must have peanut butter.” ~James A. Garfield President Garfield was at least half right. Man—or woman—cannot live by bread alone; she must have bacon and a burger. But peanut butter with that bacon burger? Before last Friday, my answer would have been no. After last Friday, I’d say I’m open to eating it again. San Antonio Burger Week So, why did I try a burger with peanut butter on it? Well, it was only $5 and it seemed like a great way to kick off the inaugural San Antonio Burger Week. Burger Week? Yep! According to the official website at https://satxburgerweek.com Burger Week…

    Give a Girl a Fish

“One must lose a minnow to catch a salmon.” ~French Proverb “Je ne suis pas d’accord. All I had to do was follow a good recipe.” ~Elda Eats Give a girl a fish, and she’ll eat for a day. Teach a girl to make a good fish recipe at home, and well, she might just make that recipe, and then enjoy all the memories that may come with it, for the rest of her life. Lucky for me, a good fish recipe was what I chose to make on Sunday as my latest culinary attempt from the best-ever recipe list from Food & Wine Magazine’s Cook the 40 Challenge. Cook…

    Tex-Mex vs. Mex-Mex?

Only Winners Here, Mis Amigos “Surround yourself with tacos, not negativity. And yes, even if those tacos are made with corn tortillas.” ~Life Advice Tex-Mex vs. Mexican food? Well, to be honest, I’ll always choose Tex-Mex. Mostly for the following reasons: it’s what I was raised on, I am a Texan/Tejana, and well, I prefer flour tortillas. That is not to say that I don’t enjoy “real” Mexican food. Especially when it’s really delicious. At the end of the day—or the start of the day if it’s breakfast, I just want good food, and if that food is enjoyed with good people, well that is truly a win-win. No matter…

If You Don’t Have Photos, Did the Year Even Happen?

Or, what I discovered when making a recipe from 1997… “I can’t find our photos from 1997!!!” ~Me to Peter as I got ready to write this blog post “All sorrows are less with bread.” ~Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra I am not sure if Don Quixote would have agreed, but I definitely agree with his creator. Bread does indeed make everything better. I was very happy to see that one of my favorite Spanish foods made the Cook the 40 list! I love bread, I love garlic and I love tomatoes. I also love Spain, but more on that later. Cook the 40 Why take on Food & Wine’s best-ever…
