“How do I stop eating chips & salsa? Do they run out, or do I die, or what?” ~anonymous “What anonymous said.” ~Elda Eats Last week was Labor Day weekend. And, for me, that weekend is traditionally a weekend where I take a long “staycation” home alone—although now it’s the dogs and me, which is even better as they love to cuddle—and spend the four or five days doing all of the things I love: reading, writing, cooking, watching college football, drafting my fantasy football team(s), taking in a few movies, relaxing, cuddling with my dogs, and eating way too many chips and way too much salsa. In general, it’s…

Go West, Young Girl!
“I take to the open road, healthy, free, the world before me.” ~Walt Whitman “I take to the Texas road, hungry, free, kolaches before me.” ~Elda Eats Not that I’ve ever needed a reason for a good road trip, but what better reason to take to the open Texas roads than for kolaches? And what about a quest to find the best kolaches in the state? Well, we couldn’t find a reason not to, and so that’s what we did. We drove around the kolache regions of the great state of Texas (aka The Republic of Texas for you foreigners…) in search of the best kolache, and also to see…

Being a carnivore…
“Never lick a steak knife.” ~Dave Barry Very funny. And no, I didn’t lick a steak knife last week, but I was almost tempted because twice last week I ate a really delicious steak. Two juicy ribeyes, one cooked at home, and one at a local pub. I could have licked the knives, the forks, my fingers and the plates! I do love a good steak, and always have. As a kid, we probably went to one of those local casual steakhouses at least twice a month (probably when my dad got paid, now that I think about it). Bonanza, Western Sizzlin, Steak and Ale…I think we also went to…

Is a Food Picture Worth a Thousand Memories?
“The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.” I am not sure who said this, or even who may have said it first, but I’ve seen the quote all over social media through the years. I’ve even posted it elsewhere, because well, it’s true. At least in my family, it’s always been true. Indeed, some of my best memories were made gathered around a table. Which got me thinking about all those great meals of my life where a photo was never taken… (yes, showing my age!) I think of all the great holidays at my grandmother’s house, the ordinary lunches where my mom would make grilled cheese…

Plokkfiskur is my new favorite food…
“…the poor man’s dish but is today served in restaurants, we would have never dreamed of it in my childhood.” ~Margrét Halldórsdóttir, a grandmother of seven, left this comment on my Instagram feed I love the world. I love traveling the world. One of the things I love most about traveling the world is getting exposed to new food, new flavors and new culinary traditions. My trip to Iceland last month could have been just about food—and not at all about the beautiful country, the nice people and the wonderful history—and it still would have been worth the trip! As I wrote in a few blogs ago, I loved eating…
