“O’ pumpkin pie, your time has come ’round again and I am autumnrifically happy!” ~Terri Guillemets
Now, you already know that I spent the month of September judging (and eating) pies. I tasted 43 pies and not a pumpkin among them. Why? Because it wasn’t time for pumpkin pie in September. But of course, now it’s October.
And October in South Texas means it’s Bill Miller pumpkin pie season. For those of you not familiar, Bill Miller B-B-Q is a better-than-just-fast-food barbecue restaurant chain that if you’re from where I’m from, it’s a huge part of your life growing up, and possibly still is even after you can afford to eat elsewhere. I think the story goes that Mr. Bill Miller started his restaurant in the early 50’s after borrowing $500 from his father.
Actually, here is the history from their website:
In 1950, on a $500 loan from his father, Bill Miller opened a small poultry and egg business. Three years later Bill Miller Bar-B-Q began as a small fried chicken-to-go restaurant. Fried chicken led to hamburgers and then to barbecue. The second restaurant opened in February of 1963. Today there are 73 Bill Miller Bar-B-Q restaurants and 5 Laguna Madre Seafood Co. restaurants.

Now, the barbecue from Bill Miller probably won’t win any of those fancy bbq contests they show on TV where greasy looking men from places other than Texas slather their bbq pork in sweet sauce that looks like syrup or is sometimes even white (what?!), but I promise you that the bbq is pretty damn good. Not only the brisket, but the fried chicken, the sides, and the customer service are all better than pretty damn good, in my opinion. Oh, and the pies! Their lemon meringue pie and their apple pies ranked pretty high in my contest last month, and well, then there’s the pumpkin.
We wait all year around these parts for it to be Bill Miller pumpkin pie season and so last week when it finally arrived, I had to get out and get some. I got a slice to go (along with my order or brisket tacos and beans) to save for later. Save and savor, I did. With whipped cream, it tasted oh, so good while I worked on another blog post. A post that wasn’t as late as this was one is. But nevertheless, the pie was perfect. And the best thing I ate last week.
I can’t wait to get another slice soon before I have to wait another whole year. Maybe I’ll wear my new t-shirt, too.
Thank you, Bill Miller!
